Next named storm of the season has short window to form off Southeast coast

The eighth named storm of the season could form — briefly — off the North Carolina coast Monday afternoon as the system moves onshore, bringing rain and higher tides.

The National Hurricane Center tagged the system over the weekend as potential tropical cyclone eight, with a chance of strengthening into Tropical Storm Helene just ahead of landfall. As of Monday morning, it appeared the system was running out of time to strengthen.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic, forecasters continued to watch Tropical Depression Gordon on its meandering track through the open Atlantic. Forecasters expect it to stay out to sea until it dissipates in a few days.
