Tom Brady leads NFL player merch sales yet again, but there's a surprise at No. 2

Once again, Tom Brady comes out on top.

Months after winning his sixth Super Bowl ring, the New England Patriots quarterback also came in first in the NFLPA’s annual player merchandise sales list, which was released on Wednesday. When you’re still winning titles while easily being the best player in the history of one of the NFL’s most popular franchises — really the reason why that franchise is so popular — perennially topping such a list makes sense.

Joining Brady in the top 10 were six other quarterbacks, two running backs and an outside linebacker.

The NFLPA’s top 10 player merch sellers

  1. Tom Brady

  2. Dak Prescott

  3. Carson Wentz

  4. Ezekiel Elliott

  5. Patrick Mahomes

  6. Saquon Barkley

  7. Aaron Rodgers

  8. DeShaun Watson

  9. Khalil Mack

  10. Drew Brees

To be clear, this list accounts for not just jersey sales, but all kinds of merchandise sold by the NFL and its partners. That can include apparel like shirseys and T-shirts, as well as things like bobbleheads, trading cards and Fatheads. The list uses data from sales between March 1, 2018, and Feb. 28, 2019.

Seeing Prescott at No. 2 is somewhat surprising, especially given his hazy future with the Dallas Cowboys, but he’s still the Cowboys quarterback — and that matters quite a bit when it comes to selling jerseys.

Who else was on the NFLPA’s list?

While only three positions were represented in the top 10, other positions were close in the rest of the list. The highest-ranked wide receiver was Antonio Brown at No. 11, though you have to imagine plenty of fans who bought the merchandise before and during the season are having some buyers’ remorse.

Here were the top players at other positions

Tight end: Rob Gronkowski, No. 11

Middle linebacker: Leighton Vander Esch, No. 31

Defensive end: J.J. Watt, No. 34

Cornerback: Jalen Ramsey, No. 36

Defensive tackle: Aaron Donald No. 50

No safeties, offensive linemen or kickers made the top 50. It’s also frankly shocking to see Donald, the two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year, that low. That could be an indication of how much work the Los Angeles Rams still have to do in reaching their city, as well as the popularity of offensive players in general.

Other notable presences were the two reigning Super Bowl MVPs with Nick Foles at No. 24 and Julian Edelman at No. 25.
