NHL: 4 stories from Sunday hockey

In the day's only game involving Canadian teams, the Calgary Flames closed out a 4-2-0 road trip by defeating the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday night. Here's more on that, plus great goaltending performances for the Kings, Rangers and Ducks.

Road trip ends with a flourish

At Winnipeg's MTS Centre the hometown Jets scored the only goal of the opening period as Mark Scheifele connected for his first of the season before the Flames came alive in the second frame en route to a 4-1 victory.

Dennis Wideman, rookie Johnny Gaudreau on the power play and Mason Raymond all scored to build a 3-1 lead.

T.J. Brodie added to the onslaught in the third as Jonas Hiller stopped 34 of 35 shots for his second win of the year. Brodie carries a six-game scoring streak into the upcoming homestand.

The Flames now get to enjoy the comforts of the Saddledome for the remainder of the month as they will play their next five games there before venturing on the road again in November.

Throwback defence

The Los Angeles Kings have been jelling with a return to the good old days of tight defence, beginning in goal, and a sparkplug unit called That 70's Line that's producing its offence. That combination saw the Kings edge the Minnesota Wild 2-1.

Jonathan Quick had 40 saves in the midst of a shutout streak that reached 111 minutes before the Wild scored in the third period as the Kings won their fourth in a row.

Tyler Toffoli had a goal and an assis,t combining with Tanner Pearson on Pearson's fifth goal of the season after opening the scoring in the second period. Toffoli (jersey No. 73) and Pearson (No. 70) have teamed with Jeff Carter (No. 77) to score 11 of the Kings' first 14 goals this season.

Rangers bite Sharks quickly

The New York Rangers used a quick-strike attack and the 51st career shutout by Henrik Lundqvist to hand the San Jose Sharks their first non-shootout loss of the season, 4-0, at Madison Square Garden.

Martin St. Louis and Rick Nash tied a Rangers' record by scoring four seconds apart in the final minute of the second period to make it 3-0. Carl Hagelin opened the scoring for the Rangers earlier in the middle frame, while Kevin Hayes supplied the final goal in the third period.

Sharks' goalie Alex Stalock couldn't stop a stuff0in by St. Louis, and then on the ensuing face-off lost control of Rick Nash's long shot, with Nash popping in the rebound. The previous time the Rangers scored twice in four seconds, in 1991, the second was into an empty net.

Lundqvist stopped Patrick Marleau late in the third to claim the shutout as the Rangers won their second straight to even their record at 3-3 after three consecutive losses.

Ducks have their game in a row

The Anaheim Ducks rumbled to their fifth straight win as they blanked the St. Louis Blues in California 3-0 on the strength of the first career shutout by Frederick Andersen and a pair of power play goals by Sami Vatanen.

Goals by Matt Bekeskey and Vatanen in the opening period were all the Ducks would need as they won for the fifth time in six starts. Vatanen added his second of the game in the second period as the Blues outshot the Ducks, 28-25,

The Ducks surrendered six goals in a season-opening loss in Pittsburgh but have tightened up since to post their five wins.

Defencemen Vatanen,23, who played for Anaheim last year, was a bronze medallist with Finland at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
