NHL: 5 stories from Monday night

On an active night for Canadian teams, the Jets, Flames, Canadiens and Canucks came out on top while the Sens and Oilers saw their rough seasons continue.

Catch up on all the action in our five stories from Monday night in the NHL.

Jets win barn-burner in shootout

It was a war of attrition in Winnipeg, where the Jets and Oilers exchanged goals, hits and injuries in a tight one that finally ended with a shootout. Winnipeg came away with the win on a goal from Blake Wheeler, 5-4.

Winnipeg's Bryan Little scored two for the home team while Edmonton's Nail Yakupov got a pair for himself, extending his point streak to five games.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins got his 15th of the season to give the Oilers the lead in the third, but brand-new Jet Tyler Myers got his first for the team to tie things back up.

After Edmonton reclaimed the lead, Winnipeg captain Andrew Ladd scored his 20th goal to pilot the Jets to overtime.

Dustin Byfuglien laid out a monster hit on the Oilers' 233-pound enforcer Luke Gazdic that set the tone.

The Jets' Mathieu Perreault limped off the ice after a crash into the boards and Oilers goalie Viktor Fasth was injured after stretching out trying to stop Wheeler's shootout winner. The Jets' Drew Stafford also sustained an injury in the third.

Flames score 4 unanswered goals to win in OT

Things didn't look good for the Calgary Flames, who were down 3-0 in the second period before something incredible happened: Calgary went on a four-goal scoring run to defeat the Bruins 4-3 in overtime.

Jiri Hudler scored two in the third to even things up and set the stage for a nail-biting finish.

With two seconds left on the clock, T.J. Brodie tossed a pop-fly over the shoulder of Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask for the victory.

Montreal pulls ahead late

As a relatively slow game in Detroit got down to the wire, the Canadiens got two goals in two minutes and 30 seconds to earn a 2-0 win over the Red Wings and sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference.

The Habs' Tomas Plekanec got the winner, followed by an empty-netter from Max Pacioretty to end this ho-hum affair. Both Plekanec and Pacioretty earned two points, assisting on each other's goals.

Montreal goalie Carey Price earned his fifth shutout of the year.

New York, New York

By far, the best game of the night was south of the border, featuring the New York Rangers edging the New York Islanders 6-5 in an energetic, back-and-forth contest that saw the Broadway Blueshirts come back from a two-goal deficit in the third period, scoring three unanswered goals. They were down by two goals at two different points in the game. This was the first time the Rangers beat the Islanders this season.

It was a hard-fought affair right from the start with John Tavares scoring for the Islanders 11 seconds into the game. The Rangers' Ryan McDonagh had his first career two-goal game and his teammate Kevin Klein scored the winner with less than five minutes to go.

Both teams put lots of pucks on net, with the Islanders getting just one more shot than the Rangers, 43-42.

The entire 60 minutes was a must-see moment.

Canucks win on rookie's 1st goal in 1st game

It was a night Alex Biega will never forget. The 26-year-old rookie scored the winning goal in his first NHL game, leading the Canucks over the Wild 3-2.

In other Canadian action, the Ottawa Senators were defeated 6-3 by the Carolina Hurricanes.
