Oilers assistant coach has awkward reaction after son scores goal for Avalanche

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Josh Manson is willing to do everything he can to beat the Edmonton Oilers, even if that means breaking his father’s heart.

Dave Manson, a former stay-at-home defenseman during his playing days, is now an assistant on the staff of Oilers interim head coach Jay Woodcroft. Though he originally expressed excitement about getting to see his granddaughter if his son’s team clinched a spot in the Western Conference final, Dave Manson might now be feeling differently about facing Josh in this high-scoring series.

Josh Manson scored a goal on four shots and blocked three others in a 4-0 win over the Oilers in Game 2 on Thursday. As the defenseman increased the Avs’ lead in the second period, the camera went straight to Dave's reaction on the Oilers’ bench, revealing an awkward grimace from the father.

The thought of facing Dad might have gotten the best of Josh Manson in Game 1, as he struggled to a minus-4 in the opener. He must have gotten over any hard feelings pretty quickly as he helped push the Avalanche to a 2-0 series.

The younger Manson joined the Avalanche from the Anaheim Ducks ahead of the NHL trade deadline, and has fit in nicely as part of a Colorado defense corps led by Norris Trophy finalist Cale Makar.

Josh Manson is up to two goals, four assists, 26 shots, 29 hits, 12 blocked shots and a minus-2 rating in 12 playoff contests. He is catching up to his father’s statistics as Dave Manson recorded seven goals and 31 points in 112 playoff games over his NHL career. He played 1,103 games with the Chicago Blackhawks, Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, Montreal Canadiens, Dallas Stars and Toronto Maple Leafs in 16 NHL seasons.

Dave Manson has a day off to forget about his son’s tally, while Josh Manson will try to ignore his father’s grimace with Game 3 taking place in Edmonton on Saturday night.
