NHL Trade Deadline Live Blog: Breaking down the action in real time

After weeks of speculation, rumours and admittedly, some trades to parse through, we’re finally at the NHL Trade Deadline.

There are a number of high-profile names that could be on the move ahead of Monday’s afternoon deadline, and a host of teams that will be looking to go all-in in hopes of lifting the Stanley Cup this summer.

We’ll keep you posted here on everything that’s happening ahead of the deadline.

3:30 p.m: As if the deadline wasn’t hectic enough, the Maple Leafs signed Jake Muzzin to a four-year extension at an average annual value (AAV) of $5.625 million.

Muzzin was one of Toronto’s top priorities this summer, and though Toronto’s defense is often cause for concern, keeping one of their top players in town for the foreseeable future has to be seen as a welcome development, and frankly, a relief.

3:00 p.m: The deadline has officially passed but as we all know, this is when the flurry of activity happens.

Robin Lehner isn’t Leaving Las Vegas, he’s actually heading there *ducks flurry of tomatoes* in exchange for a second-round pick. It’s an aggressive, calculated move by the Golden Knights who likely believe they can make another run to the Cup as they did in their inaugural season.

2:50 p.m: After some brief inactivity, the Hurricanes traded for Sami Vatanen. 10 minutes ‘til the deadline!

2:30 p.m: 35 minutes to the deadline, and the Penguins just acquired Evan Rodrigues and Conor Sheary from the Sabres in exchange for Dominik Kahun. It’ll be a reunion for Sheary, who begun his career with the Penguins and won two Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017.

For those waiting on Barrie to be dealt, hang tight.

2:20 p.m: We’re here for all transactions, and the Ovechkin family’s newest addition might be the one we’re most excited about.

2:10 p.m: Edmonton and Ottawa continue to be the most active teams at the deadline.

Tyler Ennis is heading the Oilers in exchange for a 2021 fifth-round pick, giving the team another legitimate NHL player among their bottom-six, while the Senators continue to stockpile picks for their rebuilding experiment.

1:50 p.m: Tyson Barrie is widely rumoured to be on the trade block, as the Maple Leafs try to recover from one of their most embarrassing losses in franchise history.

Barrie may have already played his last game as a member of the Maple Leafs. The team declined to make him available to the media following Monday’s practice.

1:15 p.m: Andreas Athanasiou is heading to the Oilers from the Red Wings.

Athanasiou will surely benefit from a change of scenery to the most coveted position in hockey - playing alongside Connor McDavid. He’s a world-class skater and pairing up with the fastest player in the history of the league will be a compelling watch down the stretch.

12:50 p.m.: Zach Parise to the Islanders? Excuse me?

What a win it would be for the Wild to slip out from underneath the albatross of a contract they brokered with Parise many moons ago in order to pry him from New Jersey and Lou Lamoriello.

This is a player already well on the decline, but Lou apparently is unafraid of the fact that Parise will take up more than $7.5 million on the salary cap for another five seasons after this one — or until he’s 40 years old.

No deal yet, but truly Wild stuff.

12:40 p.m.: Sorry for the delay between posts, lunch-time for us.

The Sabres have deemed that they need Wayne Simmonds, so they sent a fifth-round pick to the Devils to accomplish that. Meanwhile, the Bruins have signed up for some more team toughness, sending Danton Heinen to the Ducks for Nick Ritchie.

Noon: It’s been a busy 40 minutes. Chris Kreider, widely rumoured to be on the trade block, signed a seven-year extension with the Rangers instead, worth a reported a $45.5 million. Park Avenue awaits.

It wasn’t all good news out of New York, however. Igor Shesterkin suffered a rib fracture while in a car accident, while teammate Pavel Buchnevich avoided serious injuries.

Yahoo Sports Canada’s Justin Cuthbert and Ailish Forfar also broke down the Senators’ flurry of activity in further detail:

11:20 a.m: Rielly is now off the ice. That was short-lived. We now await more trades!

11:15 a.m: In between the action, the Predators signed Rocco Grimaldi to a two-year contract worth $4 million, proving that transactions come in all shapes and forms on deadline day.

And in other welcome news, Maple Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly has resumed skating for the first time since suffering a broken foot.

11:00 a.m: Veteran Patrick Marleau has been traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a third round pick. He’s chasing that Cup dream!!

10:50 a.m: Philadelphia has joined the party. Acquiring F Nate Thompson from Montreal for a fifth round pick.

10:15 a.m: Hurricanes grab one of the top names off the board, acquiring Vincent Trochek from the Panthers for Erik Haula, Lucas Wallmark and prospects Eetu Luostarinen and Chase Priskie. It doesn’t take much for Dale Tallon to turn on you, evidently.

9:50 a.m: Ottawa is not messing around this morning. First, it sent forward Vladislav Namestnikov to Colorado in exchange for a 4th-round pick in 2021.

Next, the Senators packaged Jean-Gabriel Pageau to the Islanders for a massive haul. They get a conditional first-round pick in 2020 (if it’s a top 3 selection it moves to 2021), a second-round pick in 2020, and another conditional third-round pick in 2022 (only if the Islanders win the Stanley Cup this year).

9:15 a.m: Last year, the first trade happened at 9:01 a.m., but nothing’s happened so far. That’s bound to change soon, right?

9:00 a.m: We got a trade just after midnight last night, as Mike Green will be heading to the Oilers. Although he’s not the same player he was in his prime, it indicates that the Oilers are at least trying to do what they can to amplify their playoff bid.
