Nicole Kidman, is that you? See actress's grungy new look for 'Destroyer'

When we last saw Nicole Kidman, she played the upper-class Monterey, Calif., wife and mother Celeste, who, from the outside, had it all together in HBO’s acclaimed Big Little Lies. She wore fitted blazers, cozy-but-elegant sweaters, and yoga gear in a pretty palette of neutrals that helped her fit right into the gossipy, seaside community.

For her next project, the Oscar-winning actress has something completely different planned. Kidman appears downright haggard in the just-released photo from the upcoming movie, Destroyer.

The snapshot features Kidman looking directly, albeit blankly, into the camera, wearing clothing that would certainly make Celeste and company wince. Her face is free of makeup, unless you count the smudges of dirt that appear to be caked on her face. The hair that hangs around her face is graying and could use a wash.

Not that Kidman’s character has much time for such luxuries; she has bigger problems. Destroyer, directed by Jennifer’s Body director Karyn Kusama, tells the story of Los Angeles Police Department detective Erin Bell, who was once “placed undercover with a gang in the California desert with tragic results,” according to the official description of the movie. “When the leader of that gang re-emerges many years later, she must work her way back through the remaining members and into her own history with them to finally reckon with the demons that destroyed her past.”

Kidman, 51, scored an Oscar for Best Actress for her role as Virginia Woolf in 2002’s The Hours, in which she sported a fake nose. Clearly, the team behind Destroyer has high expectations too. They’ve scheduled the movie to open on Christmas Day, at the peak of awards show-bait season. Bradley Whitford, Sebastian Stan, and Tatiana Maslany round out the cast.

Fans of a more glammed-up Kidman might prefer to catch her as Queen Atlanna in another end-of-year release: Aquaman, with Jason Momoa, which arrives in theaters Dec. 21. Kidman is scheduled to take on a handful of other roles before she slips back into her Celeste wardrobe for the second season of Big Little Lies.
