The NBA and 27 Major Companies Donating To Fight Inequality

Many brands and corporations have expressed their support for the Black Lives Matter movement on social media and with public statements — but which ones are putting their money where their mouths are?

With the aim to end systemic racism and inequality, these 25 companies have donated money to organizations that help. Discover who is spending big and speaking out.

Lululemon

  • Donation amount: $100,000

“We are making a $100,000 donation to the Minnesota Freedom Fund,” Lululemon announced on Instagram. “And we know that to be a stand against inequity and injustice of any kind, we all need to do so much more. You have our commitment we will.”

Toms

  • Donation amount: $100,000

Toms has pledged to donate $100,000 over the course of three months to “organizations that are working to combat racial injustice, starting with a donation to Black Lives Matter,” the company announced on Instagram.

Ubisoft

  • Donation amount: $100,000

Gaming company Ubisoft announced a $100,000 donation to the NAACP and Black Lives Matter on Twitter.

 

Levi's

  • Donation amount: $200,000

Levi Strauss & Co. announced on Instagram a $100,000 donation to the ACLU, plus a $100,000 grant to Live Free USA, an organization working to mitigate gun violence and the mass incarceration of people of color.

Spanx

  • Donation amount: $200,000

“We are donating $100,000 across national organizations focused on combating racial injustice: Black Lives Matter, NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, and the Minnesota Freedom Fund,” Spanx announced on Instagram. “In addition, we are committed to donating an additional $100,000 to organizations in our own home of Atlanta. To be an ally is to speak out against injustice and to be ears to listen to the POC experience. To be an ally to us means having a heart for empathy for the oppressed and a hand to make change.”

Gap Inc.

  • Donation amount: $250,000

Gap, Athleta, Banana Republic and Old Navy collectively donated $250,000 to support the NAACP and EmbraceRace, the company announced on Instagram.

Square Enix

  • Donation amount: $250,000

Square Enix pledged to donate $250,000 plus matching employee contributions to Black Lives Matter and other organizations and charities dedicated to combatting racial injustice, the company announced on Twitter.

Flamingo and Harry's

  • Donation amount: $500,000

Body care brands Flamingo and Harry’s donated $500,000 to “organizations that combat racism and support mental health care access for black communities,” the company announced on Instagram.

 

 

Lyft

  • Donation amount: $500,000

Lyft co-founders Logan Green and John Zimmer announced in a note to the company that the ride-share app would be “providing $500,000 in ride credit to national civil rights organizations who have been working to facilitate essential transportation and equitable access during the recent crises (National Urban League, NAACP, National Action Network, Black Women’s Roundtable and National Bail Fund Network).”

Peloton

  • Donation amount: $500,000

Peloton made a $500,000 donation to the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, the company announced on Twitter.

Wendy's

  • Donation amount: $500,000

“We’re about putting our money where our mouth is. So here’s our money and here’s our mouth,” Wendy’s tweeted. “We are committed to donating $500K to support social justice, the youth and education in the black community starting with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and we’ll have receipts.”

 

Electronic Arts

  • Donation amount: $1 million

Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson sent a note to his employees detailing the company’s planned actions against racial injustice, which included donating $1 million to “organizations dedicated to the fight for racial justice in the U.S. and against discrimination around the world.”

“Beginning with the Equal Justice Initiative, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and with more partners to come, we are deepening our support of organizations working to stop systemic racial injustice, fight discrimination and protect human rights in the U.S. and beyond,” Wilson stated. “In addition to our company contribution, we’ll double match any funds that you donate to these and any other local organizations through our YourCause program during the month of June.”

 

Etsy

  • Donation amount: $1 million

In a corporate blog post, Etsy announced that it would be donating $500,000 to the Equal Justice Initiative and $500,000 to Borealis Philanthropy’s Black-Led Movement Fund, as well as matching employee donations.

“We encourage our community to join us in supporting these important organizations,” Etsy CEO Josh Silverman stated.

 

Glossier

  • Donation amount: $1 million

Beauty brand Glossier announced on Instagram that the company would be donating $500,000 across a number of organizations, including Black Lives Matter, the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Equal Justice Initiative, the Marsha P. Johson Institue and We the Protestors.

“In an effort to make an impact within our own industry, we will be allocating an additional $500K in the form of grants to black-owned beauty businesses,” the company shared on the social platform.

 

Home Depot

  • Donation amount: $1 million

Home Depot CEO Craig Menear announced in a corporate blog post that the company would be donating $1 million to the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law “in support of its vital work to secure civil rights and equal justice for all. Its mission is especially critical now as we work to build a more inclusive society,” he stated.

 

Intel

  • Donation amount: $1 million

“Intel is pledging $1 million in support of efforts to address social injustice and anti-racism across various nonprofits and community organizations,” the company’s CEO Bob Swan stated in a memo to company employees. “I also encourage employees to consider donating to organizations focused on equity and social justice, including the Black Lives Matter Foundation, the Center for Policing Equity and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, all of which are eligible for Intel’s Donation Matching Program.”

 

 

Uber

  • Donation amount: $1 million

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi shared on Twitter that Uber would be donating $1 million to the Equal Justice Initiative and Policing Equity.

Warby Parker

  • Donation amount: $1 million

Warby Parker pledged $1 million “to organizations and initiatives focused on combating systemic racism,” the company announced on Instagram.

 

YouTube

  • Donation amount: $1 million

“We stand in solidarity against racism and violence,” YouTube tweeted. “When members of our community hurt, we all hurt. We’re pledging $1M in support of efforts to address social injustice.”

Lego

  • Donation amount: $4 million

Lego announced on Twitter that it would be donating $4 million “to organizations dedicated to supporting black children and educating all children about racial inequality.”

Disney

  • Donation amount: $5 million

The Walt Disney Company pledged to donate $5 million to “nonprofit organizations that advance social justice.”

“This begins with a $2 million donation to the NAACP and follows with more donations to worthy organizations like the United Negro College Fund,” the company stated in a press release.

 

UnitedHealth

  • Donation amount: $5 million

UnitedHealth Group announced a donation of $5 million to the YMCA Equity Innovation Center of Excellence in George Floyd’s memory, the StarTribune reported. The company also said it would pay for the college education of Floyd’s children.

 

Amazon

  • Donation amount: $10 million

Amazon announced on Instagram that it was donating $10 million to “organizations that support economic opportunities, education and justice for black Americans.”

The organizations the online retail giant donated to include the ACLU, the Brennan Center for Justice, the Equal Justice Initiative, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the NAACP, the National Bar Association, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Urban League, the Thurgood Marshall College Foundation the UNCF and Year Up.

“We stand in support of organizations that are making a difference,” Amazon stated.

Facebook

  • Donation amount: $10 million

CEO Mark Zuckerburg announced in a Facebook post that the social media company would be donating $10 million to “groups working on racial justice. We’re working with our civil rights advisors and our employees to identify organizations locally and nationally that could most effectively use this right now,” he said.

Nike

  • Donation amount: $40 million (Nike, Jordan and Converse)

  • Donation amount: $100 million (Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand)

Nike, Inc. announced that Nike, Jordan and Converse would be teaming up to contribute $40 million over four years “to support the black community in the U.S.” In addition to the Nike, Inc. contribution, Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand pledged an additional $100 million donation over 10 years “to organizations dedicated to ensuring racial equality, social justice and greater access to education.”

The NFL

  • Donation: $250 million

The NFL has changed their tune on the fight against racial inequality. The league has gone from punishing Colin Kaepernick and other players for kneeling during the national anthem to pledging $250 million over the next 10 years to combat systemic racism.

In a twitter post on June 11, the league said, “In addition to he financial commitment, we will continue to leverage the NFL Network and all our media properties to place an increased emphasis on raising awareness and promoting education of social justice issues to our fans and help foster unity.”

The NBA

  • Donation amount: $300 million

In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, the NBA — arguably the most progressive sports league in the nation — formed the NBA Foundation dedicated to empowering Black communities through education and employment opportunities. Each of the 30 NBA teams will donate $1 million annually for the next 10 years — a $300 million donation in sum.

Bank of America

  • Donation amount: $1 billion

Bank of America pledged to donate $1 billion over a four-year period to support programs that address economic and racial inequality. The company also pledged to support minority-owned small businesses and to partner with historically black and Hispanic educational institutions, Reuters reported.
