No charges in Ride the Rideau crash that killed cyclist, police say
Ottawa police say no charges will be laid in the collision between a dump truck and a bicycle during last fall's Ride the Rideau event that killed cyclist Laurie Strano.
Strano, a 40-year-old mother of two children, was struck by a garbage truck near the intersection of River and Doyle roads in the south Ottawa suburb of Manotick on Sept. 6, 2014.
She was cycling in the charity event hosted by the Ottawa Hospital Foundation and was riding ahead of a small group of riders when she was struck, witnesses said.
She was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The Ottawa police collision investigations unit say they have completed their investigation and say no charge will be laid.
The regional supervising coroner of Eastern Region, Dr. Louise McNaughton-Filion, will continue to investigate Strano's death. The coroner's finding may be used to make public safety recommendations and prevent similar deaths, police said.
