No need for f-word, Slow Down campaign good reminder for drivers

A campaign to slow drivers in St. John's that started after a family pet was killed on Old Topsail Road is gaining momentum.

Sarah Minty started the "Slow Down for Frigs Sakes!" Facebook group in September after her cat Sally was killed by a speeding driver.

No need for f-word

When group member and graphic designer Kim Devlin took on the task of creating signage for the campaign, she decided to remove the word "frig" from signs and bumper stickers.

"I didn't know if putting any f-words would have been okay with everyone, so I made it a little bit more generic," Devlin told CBC News.

The signs say, "Please slow down — this is our neighbourhood," which is also the new name of the Facebook group.

Signs popping up throughout town

Devlin said there are at least 125 lawn signs in the city, and orders are still coming in. She said most of the signs are in the west end in residential neighbourhoods such as Waterford Bridge Road.

But Devlin said people in the downtown and in the east end of St. John's are also starting to put up the signs.

A friendly reminder for drivers

And so far, Devlin said the campaign seems to be effective in slowing down speeding drivers. She said feedback from people who bought signs has been positive. "I do think that they're helping," she said.

Devlin has two signs on her own front yard as a reminder for drivers to ease up on the gas pedal.

"You see a sign like that and it might say to you, 'Oh of course, I'm kind of going a little bit too fast so I should slow down.'"
