No topic safe from cartoonist in 'You Might Be From Alberta If...'

Pickup trucks, rednecks and frozen windshields are all fair game in an Alberta cartoonist's newest release, You Might Be From Alberta If ... .

Dave Elston is an editorial cartoonist from Cochrane, Alta. His newest publication is a collection of cartoons that poke fun at the stereotypes that make Albertans, Albertans.

"Everybody's got a sense of humour here, so it was kind of a natural thing," Elston told CBC News.

Elston was approached by MacIntyre Purcell Publishing last year with the idea for the book. After careful consideration, the ideas started flowing and he decided he was up for the challenge.

Drawing from real-life experience, Elston said he tried to be as inclusive as possible and not focus on any one city or area. He tried to "capture the essence of being an Albertan."

Asked if he's worried about using stereotypes, Elston said the book was an opportunity to use them to his advantage.

"I was just trying to lighten things up and actually point out that we live in a pretty great province."

He hopes the book will appeal to a national audience.

"I would think everybody is going to have at least one cartoon that resonates with them if they know somebody from Alberta. "

You Might Be From Alberta If … is published by MacIntyre Purcell Publishing. It is available in bookstores now.
