North Klondike Highway crash sends 2 to hospital with serious injuries

Two men were taken to hospital in Whitehorse with serious injuries yesterday after their vehicle went off the road and down a 9-metre embankment.

RCMP say the crash happened at 5:40 p.m. Monday, on the North Klondike Highway, just north of Whitehorse.

Police say a witness saw the northbound car overtake them, then lose control and go off the road and down the embankment. The car landed on the driver's side at the bottom of the embankment, trapping two men inside.

Witnesses were able to get the driver out, and the Whitehorse Fire Department freed the passenger. Both were taken to Whitehorse General Hospital with serious injuries.

The North Klondike Highway was closed in both directions for about three hours while the Yukon RCMP's collision analyst and reconstructionist attended the scene.

The RCMP are still investigating the incident and are asking witnesses to contact them. Police say alcohol may be a factor in the crash.
