North Myrtle Beach is planning a living shoreline in Cherry Grove. Here’s how you can help
North Myrtle Beach is looking for volunteers to construct oyster baskets in an effort to create a living shoreline at the Heritage Shores Nature Preserve.
The baskets built would draw in juvenile oysters who would then filter out pollutants in the water at the Cherry Grove nature preserve located at 53rd Avenue North public boat ramp, according to a press release from the City of North Myrtle Beach. This would help with the re-establishment of the natural environment.
A living shoreline is where the shoreline consists of natural materials as opposed to hard, man-made materials such as a sea wall, according to NOAA Fisheries. Marshes are one type of living shoreline.
Baskets will be built from December through February and will be taken to the preserve in April. Volunteers are needed to build, oversee and help others.
