North Rustico preparing for winter

It's the hottest week of the summer, but the P.E.I. town of North Rustico is preparing for winter.

Mayor Anne Kirk said there were safety issues that came to light after a series of major storms in February and March.

"Last year in the huge snow that we had, we had people that couldn't get out for a couple of days," said Kirk.

"This year we're implementing a new program with the fire department after every storm. People that live alone, they're going to check to make sure that they're alright."

Kirk said the fire department will start their checks after the first winter storm of the season, and offer assistance to people who need it.
