Nova Scotia RCMP lay 5 impaired driving charges in 1 night

One Nova Scotia RCMP officer says it's the most impaired driving charges he's seen in one night in his 15-year career.

A total of five motorists were charged with impaired driving and a sixth was handed a seven-day licence suspension during Friday's night shift in the Halifax area.

It started with two separate accidents in Dartmouth, both of them in the area of Caldwell Road and Astral Drive. A driver from each of those crashes was charged.

There were no injures in either collision.

A traffic stop on Caldwell Road resulted in a third driver charged.

The fourth charge came when a vehicle was pulled over on Highway 107, near the Porters Lake exit.

The final charge was laid after a driver failed the breath test at a checkpoint on Highway 102 near the exit to Bedford.

That same checkpoint netted a sixth driver who was given a seven-day licence suspension for having a blood alcohol level over 0.05.

'Very unusual'

Const. Jamall Gray said it was an unique situation.

"It is unusual for us to have that many in one night for sure, especially all in that area," he said.

"To have that many, actually go to charges in one night is very unusual."

Gray said it's an experience he's never had before.

"I think that's the highest I've seen in one night in my 15 years."
