NTSB investigates weekend aircraft crashes in Texas, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois that killed 10 people

The National Transportation Safety Board has opened multiple investigations after four aircraft crashes this weekend killed 10 people in four states.

Two of the crashes were Sunday: All four people aboard were killed when a small plane crashed in Texas, CNN reported, and three people died when another small plane crashed in Indiana.

The Texas crash involved a Piper PA-46, the NTSB tweeted. CNN reported that the plane experienced engine trouble and was attempting an emergency landing at Hilltop Lakes Airport, about 130 miles northeast of Austin.

The crash happened just before 11 a.m., according to CNN. Two men and two women were aboard the plane, which was traveling to Louisiana from Austin, CNN reported.

In Kokomo, Indiana, roughly 60 miles north of Indianapolis, three people were killed but one survived in another morning plane crash, authorities said.

Deputies were dispatched around 11:30 a.m. to the Glenndale Airport and found a plane on fire in a field, the Howard County sheriff's department said in a statement.

Authorities said they were withholding details about the victims, including names and ages, pending notification of family. The NTSB tweeted the plane involved was a Piper PA-32.

There were also two deadly crashes on Saturday.

The occupants of a two-seat small engine airplane died in a crash in Michigan that happened "shortly after takeoff," according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office. The crash happened just after 6:30 a.m. and the plane was found northeast of the runway at the Ottawa Executive Airport, the sheriff's office reported.

Dale Deweese, 61, and Joyce Deweese, 59, were killed in the crash. The plane was a 2006 Byerley RV9A, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said in an incident report provided to USA TODAY. The Ottawa Executive Airport is in Zeeland, roughly 160 miles west of Detroit.

Later Saturday, the pilot of a helicopter was killed in a crash, the Illinois State Police said in a statement to USA TODAY. The ISP responded to a call at around 2:20 p.m in Red Bud, roughly 130 miles south of the state's capital city, Springfield. KTVI-TV reported the helicopter crashed into a storage unit.

"Once ISP arrived it was determined the crash resulted in the death of the sole male occupant," the ISP said in a statement.

In separate tweets over the weekend, the NTSB confirmed it was investigating all four crashes.
