Nunavut Arctic College will not reopen Ukkivik Residence

Nunavut Arctic College will not be renovating or reopening Iqaluit's Ukkivik Residence, but administration says there will be living accommodations and classroom spaces for all students.

In April, the dorm, known locally as 'Old Res,' was extensively damaged by water after a fire in one of the building's rooms set off the sprinkler system. RCMP later charged a 34-year-old man with arson with disregard for human life.

Last year, the building also underwent extensive renovations to remove asbestos and mould.

A number of classes were also held in the Ukkivik Residence. The college says it is co-ordinating its programs, so other classroom space can be shared.
