Nunavut publishes regulations for Iqaluit beer and wine store

Iqaluit beer and wine store won't open this year, minister says

Iqaluit's wine and beer store has taken a step closer to reality with the Nunavut government's publication of regulations for the possible future establishment.

The most recent edition of the Nunavut Gazette, an official record of the territorial government's business, includes regulations for an Iqaluit beer and wine store.

Under the regulations, the hours of operation would be noon to 7 p.m. any day except holidays.

Customers would have to create an account at the store; any adult could apply for an account by providing their address and photo identification. Account holders would have to present photo ID to make a purchase and each purchase would be recorded.

There would be a daily purchase limit of 12 cans or bottles of beer containing 500 millilitres or less each, and two 1-litre bottles of wine.

Iqaluit residents overwhelmingly voted in favour of a beer and wine store in a non-binding plebiscite in April, 1,126 to 326. Voter turnout was around 40 per cent.

The plebiscite followed a heated public consultation last October, where many residents spoke against opening a beer and wine store.

No one at the territorial finance department was available to confirm whether the store will definitely be created. The territorial cabinet has final say over whether the store becomes a reality.
