'Oblivious' driver chased, arrested in Kelowna drive-thru

Slashing in Vancouver's West End leaves 2 injured

A Kelowna woman apparently on a drunken burger run is facing charges after she was arrested by RCMP in the drive-thru — metres from the order window.

The unidentified 25-year-old woman is facing impaired driving charges after the arrest in the 2100 block of Harvey Avenue in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The chase began when a Kelowna RCMP officer on patrol noticed a black Ford F150 pickup truck driving dangerously along Clement Avenue around 2:40 a.m. PT, police said.

Oblivious to police

The officer attempted to stop the black Ford, which narrowly missed colliding with three parked vehicles, police said.

RCMP said the driver seemed oblivious to lights and sirens and kept driving.

At that point backup vehicles converged on the black Ford, said police, which pulled into the Harvey Avenue restaurant drive-thru.

The obviously impaired driver was taken into custody, police said.

Tragedy averted

Police took samples of the driver's breath and determined they were almost three times the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, said Cst. Jesse O'Donaghey.

"This had the potential to end in tragedy. Fortunately, it was the quick actions of the police who safely removed this allegedly dangerous drunk driver from our roads," O'Donaghey said.

The woman faces charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle, impaired over 0.08, and driving while prohibited. She is set to appear in court Jan. 28.

Police did not identify the woman or the name of the fast food restaurant.
