The family of an eight-year-old girl is publicly expressing their gratitude after a fellow Ottawa-area restaurant diner and saved the child from choking.

The Ross family was out for breakfast Saturday to celebrate a birthday when Emmah realized she stuffed her face with too much food.

“I was just eating some bacon and then I had too much in my mouth and then I started choking on it,” the young girl told CTV News.

As the child’s mother panicked, “a random stranger” approached the family’s table.

“She just came up behind my daughter, asked me if she was choking, I said ‘yes,’ and then she did the Heimlich three times on her and it dislodged,” said Stefanie Ross. “I feel deeply indebted to her.”

The stranger turned out to be an off-duty police officer, who is only known at this time by the name Tina. The family is hoping to find out more information about their newfound hero so they can offer her a proper thank you.

“I would just say thanks again for like saving my life,” Emmah told the news outlet.

“Anything could have happened. Nobody else stepped up,” the mother explained to CTV News. “She did and then just went back to her table like it was nothing.”

After the frightening experience, the concerned parent added that she will be taking a CPR course so she can be prepared to help others in case something like this happens again.
