Officer struck by SUV while investigating collision

An Edmonton police officer was struck by an SUV while he was investigating a collision in southwest Edmonton Tuesday morning.

The officer was standing beside another vehicle around 8:25 a.m. at the intersection of Terwillegar Drive and 40th Avenue when he was struck by a Kia Rondo.

The officer landed on the hood of the SUV. His injuries are not considered life-threatening. The 92-year-old driver of the Kia is facing a number of charges.

This is the second time this month that an Edmonton police officer was struck while investigating a collision. .

On July 15, two officers were also struck by a driver in south Edmonton, but police spokeswoman Patrycia Thenu says collisions like these are rare.

"We want to send a message to motorists to just pay extra caution if they see police vehicles on the side of the road conducting an investigation, or in fact, any emergency vehicle, to please, please slow down," she said.

A 69-year-old man faces charges.
