Fluid leak causes traffic headaches in Winnipeg

Traffic makes its way alongside the slick of oil on Portage Avenue East, near The Fairmont Hotel.

A hydraulic fluid spill made a mess of traffic in Winnipeg, including the busy Portage and Main intersection.

Two northbound lanes of Main Street at Portage Avenue were blocked for more than two hours, as were the westbound lanes on the Provencher Bridge.

The long slick, which showed up just before 8:30 a.m., ran from Plinguet Street and Archibald Street in the city's St. Boniface area all the way up Provencher Boulevard to Main and Portage in downtown.

A backhoe with a ruptured hydraulic hose was blamed for leaving the trail, which caused a motorcyclist to lose control on the bridge and a bicyclist to take a spill near Pioneer Avenue.

There is no word on their injuries.

The roadway was deemed safe and re-opened to all traffic just before 11 a.m.
