Oilers owner Daryl Katz now in the movie business
Daryl Katz has gone Hollywood.
The owner of the Edmonton Oilers announced Monday he will partner with long-time movie producer Joel Silver to create Silver Pictures Entertainment, a new company to develop, produce and finance feature films, television programs and digital projects.
Silver has produced more than 70 films during his career, including the Sherlock Holmes franchise, the Matrix trilogy, the four-part Lethal Weapon series and several Die Hard films. His films have cumulatively earned more than $14 billion in global revenue, according to a statement released Monday.
"Joel Silver has an incredible track record and relationships across the entertainment industry," Katz said in a statement announcing his latest business venture . "We are very excited to be partnering with Joel, Hal and their team to capitalize on the opportunity to build a great business by making great entertainment. Silver Pictures is an important part of the vision and breadth of our growing sports & entertainment business."
Katz is the founder and chairman of the Katz Group. His company has business interests in pharmacy, sports and entertainment, and real estate development. His Oilers Entertainment Group will operate Rogers Place, the new sports and entertainment complex under construction in downtown Edmonton.
"Daryl Katz is an entrepreneur in the truest sense of the word. I've watched him build brands, sports teams and multi-billion dollar businesses with vision and drive, and that's someone I want by my side," Silver said in a statement.. "Daryl's expressed interest is to enhance his sport and entertainment division with significant entertainment properties and it's really exciting for me to be with him on that journey."
Silver Pictures will be headquartered in Venice, Calif. Long-time media finance executive Hal Sadoff will serve as chief executive officer of the new company.
