'Are You Okay?' Fans Are Worried About Paula Deen After Her Instagram Post
Earlier this month, disgraced television personality Paula Deen shared a seemingly casual Instagram post in honor of National Homemade Cookie Day. However, despite the lighthearted content, fans were shocked over the celebrity chef's unrecognizable appearance.
Online users quickly flooded Deen's comment section with concern over her "thin" frame. In fact, many worried the weight loss was "unhealthy" and that she was "not well."
"You are too thin Paula, but you are still a beauty. Love your videos and those cookies look delish," one person wrote under the photo. "I agree, her weight loss looks unhealthy. This ridicules craze of being so thin has gotten out of hand," another chimed in.
"Paula u are gorgeous but stop losing weight," a third Instagram user added.
Others were quick to come to her defense.
"You look so good," a fan said. "Some of these comments are so bad. No one can win. Imagine this was you," another supporter wrote. "Happy and healthy is the ultimate goal. Try it."
Deen’s weight loss might not come as a total surprise to fans that have followed her career post-scandal. Despite the former Food Network star’s fall from fame, she made an attempted comeback in 2018 with a show on RFD-TV called Positively Paula that focused on healthier, vegan recipes.
Despite the short-lived series, and Deen's continued social media presence, the chef and former television personality has flown largely under-the-radar since her 2013 scandal, when she openly admitted to using racial slurs in the past. “Yes, of course,” she said when asked in a deposition, after a former general manager of her Savannah, Georgia, restaurant filed a lawsuit. She added that it’s “just not a word that we use as time has gone on. Things have changed since the ‘60s in the south. And my children and my brother object to that word being used in any cruel or mean behavior. As well as I do.”
The controversy snowballed when it was revealed that Deen wanted her Black employees to act as enslaved people to “represent a certain era in America.” That same year, footage resurfaced of Deen sympathizing with slave-owning ancestors.
In response, The Food Network did not renew Paula’s Home Cooking after a 14-year run. Additional allegations of racism continued until Deen was forced to close down her restaurant, Uncle Bubbas.
