Cousin charged in Scarborough teen's shooting death in Jamaica

A 19-year-old Jamaican man has been charged with killing his teenage cousin visiting from Canada in the capital of Kingston, police say.

Omar James, of Kingston, surrendered to police Monday night after 14-year-old Ricardo Williams of the Scarborough area of Toronto was shot while attending a wake at a home in the Olympic Gardens neighbourhood.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force identified James as a person of interest shortly after the shooting about 2 a.m. local time Sunday.

Police said James and Williams were alone in a room at the time of the shooting, but didn't elaborate on a potential motive.

James, who police said goes by the nickname Judge, was arrested and charged after he was questioned with his lawyer present, officials said.

He has been charged with murder and illegal possession of a firearm.

Williams, a high school student at West Hill Collegiate Institute, had been set to return to Canada this week. Police said his stepmother is still in Jamaica.
