Woman dead after shooting near Montreal Lake
One woman is dead and a teenager is in hospital with non-life threatening injuries after an altercation on the Montreal Lake Cree Nation.
Police were called to the community roughly 100 kilometres north of Prince Albert on Saturday. When officers arrived at a residence there they found a 16-year-old male with an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Investigations determined an altercation took place at the residence and a black car was witnessed leaving the scene.
A vehicle matching the description given to police was located near the Christopher Lake turnoff on Highway 2. After a short pursuit the vehicle stopped and two males fled on foot.
Police found 25-year-old Trina Bird dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside the car.
After a short chase, involving the Prince Albert Police, Ministry of Environment staff and the RCMP police dog service unit, two males were taken into custody.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and more information will be provided as it is made available.
Police patrolling community: Chief
Montreal Lake Cree Nation Chief Frank Roberts said police had informed him about some of the details around the shooting.
"It seems like it's all gang-related, a couple of rival gangs [in] some kind of dispute, I'm not too sure what it was [about]," Roberts said.
The chief said he was told the 16-year-old male who was taken to hospital is now recovering and expected to be okay.
Roberts said RCMP from the community are knocking on doors in order to find people who might have potentially been involved in the incident.
He said Montreal Lake Cree Nation staff are also patrolling the community in order to ensure band members are safe. Roadblocks have been set up into and out of the community in an effort to eliminate any potential retaliatory attacks.
"We've doubled up our security in the community," Roberts said.
When Roberts spoke with CBC News, he said he was on his way to talk with Bird's mother and start discussing funeral plans with her. Roberts said community members have also been offering their support to Bird's family in any way they can.
