Police watchdog investigates man's death in officer-involved Tecumseh shooting

The provincial police watchdog is investigating after a police involved shooting in Tecumseh, Ont., that ended in the death of a 48-year-old man and injured multiple police officers.

According to the Special Investigations Unit, Ontario Provincial Police responded to a call about a man in distress on Friday night. Essex County OPP said the home was in the 600 block of Estate Park in Tecumseh.

In a news release, the SIU said officers interacted with the man inside the home — where one officer discharged his firearm and shot the man.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to the SIU, three police officers were also injured and taken to hospital but have since been released.

The police watchdog has assigned five investigators, including two forensic investigators to this incident, and said a post-mortem is scheduled for Sunday in London, Ont.

The SIU has also asked anyone with potential video evidence to upload it to their website.
