18-year-old critically injured after hit-and-run in west Edmonton yard

An 18-year-old man is in critical condition after someone drove a truck into a west Edmonton yard in a hit-and-run incident Monday afternoon.

There were several young adults in the yard at the time of the crash, according to the aunt of the injured teen who lives at the residence.

The driver of the truck apparently had a confrontation with one of those young people before plowing through a fence, hitting the teenager.

The aunt, Beth Cork, was not home at the time but was called immediately after the crash occurred.

Neighbours said they heard a young woman in the yard of the residence at 190th Street and 85th Avenue yelling, "Help me! Help! Help! Help!"

Neighbour Shirley Henry said another neighbour banged on her door asking for help.

Henry, a nurse for four decades, said she went across the street and saw a young man lying prone on the ground with serious injuries.

"Every limb was twisted in angles that I'd never seen," she said. "It looked awful."

The teenager had irregular breathing and Henry said she struggled to find a pulse. None of the other people in the yard appeared injured, she said.

The crash occurred in the Aldergrove neighbourhood, a residential area where many residents have lived for decades. The house is located on a corner lot encircled by a brown fence. Neighbours said various tenants have rotated through the residence over the years and they did not know the current residents.

When the crash first occurred, Henry said she heard screaming that was "intense."

"I heard 'hit by a truck' and then this screaming and a lot of anger, really angry voices, and crying and hysterical kind of things. It didn't tone down ... and then when [a neighbour] rang the doorbell, and said they needed a nurse, I headed over."

No suspect in custody

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene at approximately 1 p.m.

The driver had already fled the scene and no suspect is in custody.

Cork, the injured teenager's aunt, said her nephew, his older brother, and the older brother's girlfriend had come to live with her recently. She has lived in the house since September.

Investigators remained on scene Monday afternoon and much of the street was cordoned off with police tape. A fence near the edge of the curb was heavily cracked and sagging.

Police have provided no information on the identity of the driver or the suspected cause of the crash.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
