A man is dead after a shooting in Brampton early Sunday, Peel police say.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of a commercial area near Alfred Kuehne and Advance boulevards, near Dixie Road and Steeles Avenue East, according to Const. Mandeep Khatra, spokesperson for Peel Regional Police.

Police received reports of a shooting shortly after 4:15 a.m.

"Officers arrived on scene and located a male victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Lifesaving efforts were attempted by our officers. Shortly thereafter, he was transported to a trauma centre," Khatra said. "Unfortunately, this male victim was pronounced deceased at the hospital."

Khatra said the man hadn't been identified as of Sunday afternoon, so his family members hadn't been notified.

The Peel police homicide unit has has taken over the investigation. No information about a suspect has been released.

"We know that multiple, multiple vehicles did leave the area at the time of the incident. It's unknown if those vehicles are witnesses or suspects," Khatra said.

Khatra appealed to members of the public who may have surveillance video or who may have witnessed the shooting to come forward.
