Woman dead after high-rise apartment fire in North York

One woman has died after being pulled from a high rise apartment building fire in North York.

Toronto Fire said they were called to 35 Shoreham Drive, a Toronto Community Housing (TCH) building that provides housing for seniors, at 5:21 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

They arrived to find black smoke coming from the building's eighth floor, where they located a woman inside an apartment unit.

"She was immediately removed and transferred to the care of paramedic services. Unfortunately I've been advised that she has succumbed to her injuries," said Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg.

Toronto Fire said that the fire, the cause of which has not yet been determined, was put out not long after they arrived.

Two other people on the scene had minor injuries but were not transported to hospital.

Correction : A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that 35 Shoreham Drive is managed by LOFT Community Services. In fact, it is a Toronto Community Housing building.(Jul 25, 2017 9:52 AM)
