Online Film School: Behind the Scenes of the New Program from IndieWire, Rolling Stone, NYU, and Yellowbrick

It’s not so easy to go to a classroom and study filmmaking these days, but that doesn’t mean that anyone seeking a career in the film industry has to stop learning about the craft. For “Film and TV Industry Essentials,” IndieWire has joined forces with Rolling Stone, New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and online education platform Yellowbrick to design a certificate program that will cover multiple career paths in the film industry and do so via remote learning. The program started enrolling students this fall. The curriculum is comprised of five course modules, each of which runs between three and five hours, with a range of veteran filmmakers, executives, NYU professors and others discussing topics in concise lessons. Gathering that talent to discuss the art and business of filmmaking was no easy task. Some of the participants, such as Ang Lee, visited a sanitized studio and interacted with interviewers through remote technology. Others participated from their own homes. Yellowbrick staff recorded the interviews using OpenReel, a virtual video recording and creation platform.
