Only Murders' Selena Gomez pitched dark killer twist for Mabel
Only Murders in the Building star Selena Gomez has shared that she pitched a dark twist for her character, Mabel Mora.
The comedy-mystery show returned on Hulu and Disney+ last month with its fourth season, with the plot following the central trio – Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Gomez) – as they balance their crime-solving lives with newfound Hollywood fame.
Despite the core concept of the series being the camaraderie – and occasional bickering – between the trio, Gomez revealed in an interview with Variety that she suggested an altogether different idea for her character in one of the seasons: that she be the killer!

“I did pitch that. I don’t think it’s going to work out, but who knows? You never know,” confirmed Gomez, who was speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival on the press tour for her upcoming musical, Emilia Pérez.
Though audiences will likely never see Gomez’s suggestion ever come to fruition, they'll get to see plenty of other antics from the cast after the show was renewed for a fifth season, with the order coming as a result of continued critical acclaim.
The Daily Telegraph wrote that “the charm of Only Murders goes beyond the celebs and the steady stream of one-liners and slapstick humour,” adding that “the show has always been dutifully about constructing a compelling whodunnit.”

“Season 4 never loses a step in its commitment to deliver a compelling whodunnit,” wrote The Wrap, while The Daily Beast noted that the fourth season “elicit[ed] more laughs than any small-screen comedy since last year's instalment.”
RogerEbert.com also wrote a glowing review, noting: “For its star-packed fourth outing, Only Murders in the Building blends the celebrities-playing-a-heightened-version-of-themselves with the ever-precious play-within-a-play, and the result is pretty fun.”
Only Murders in the Building streams on Hulu in the US and Disney+ in the UK.
