Ontario sees another record-breaking day with more than 3,300 new COVID-19 cases reported, 56 deaths

Ontario had another record-breaking day for COVID-19 cases, with 3,328 new cases reported on Thursday. This includes 888 new cases in Toronto, 431 in Peel, 418 in York Region, 257 in Windsor-Essex County and 194 in Ottawa.
This spike in cases comes after the province hit its previous record of 2,923 new COVID-19 cases reported on Wednesday.
Although it is still not known how many of these new cases are connected to holiday gatherings, Ontario has now seen cases rise above 3,000 five days after the province-wide lockdown came into effect on Dec. 26.
Ontario confirmed 56 more COVID-19 deaths, bringing the total to 4,530.
A total of 63,858 tests were completed in the previous day, with 72,283 tests currently under investigation. Test positivity has also dipped significantly from 8.4 per cent on Wednesday to 5.7 per cent on Thursday. Ontario’s test positivity hit its high on Dec. 29 at 9.7 per cent.
There are currently 1,235 people with COVID-19 in Ontario hospitals, including 337 in ICUs.
Additionally, 187 long-term care homes in the province have reported an outbreak, which includes 1,186 active resident cases and 1,050 active staff cases.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 156,012 COVID-19 cases have been resolved.
