Ontario reports fewer than 2,000 new COVID-19 cases but warns of 'technical issue' in Toronto

Ontario reported 1,913 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, including 550 new cases in Toronto, 346 in Peel and 235 in York Region.
Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Christine Elliott said that due to a “technical issue” with Toronto Public Health, this is “likely an underreporting of cases.”
On Monday, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. David Williams, said the province would have to see 1,000 new COVID-19 cases a day, or less, in order to eliminate lockdown restrictions.
“Knowing the different numbers and percents that usually get admitted to a hospital, our current rates in the second wave, and how many of those end up in ICU, you’ll get a general sense that you’ve got to get below, somewhere around or below 1,000 new cases a day,” Dr. Williams said.
Ontario confirmed 46 more COVID-19 deaths in the province, bringing the total to 5,479.
The province completed 34,531 tests in the past 24 hours, down from the 40,301 tests completed a day earlier. Ontario’s test positivity is at 6.8 per cent, up from 6.6 per cent a day earlier.
There are currently 1,626 people with COVID-19 in Ontario hospitals, including 400 in ICUs.
A total of 254 long-term care homes in the province currently have a reported outbreak, which includes 1,488 active resident cases and 1,241 active staff cases.
