Oakville hotel shooting kills 1, SIU investigating

SIU investigates after man dies in police shooting in Oakville

The province's Special Investigations Unit has stepped in after a police shooting at an Oakville, Ont. hotel left one man dead on Friday morning.

SIU spokeswoman Jasbir Brar said Halton Regional Police were called to the Monte Carlo Inn, located at the QEW and Trafalgar Road, at around 5:30 a.m.

"On arrival there was an interaction with Halton Regional Police officers and a man," said Brar. "One of the officers discharged his firearm and the man was struck and was later pronounced dead in hospital."

Police are respecting the family's wishes not to identify the 41-year-old man.

Asked whether the man had a weapon, an SIU investigator would only say, "It depends what you call a weapon."

Hotel guest Maurice Blackhorst, who is in Oakville on business from B.C., said he was awakened by the noise at 5:30 a.m.

Three large bangs

"It sounded like three large bangs," he told CBC News. "I thought it was somebody beating on somebody's door. And then there was quiet after that. I've stayed here for years, I've never seen anything like this here before."

Brar said SIU investigators have designated one subject officer and seven witness officers.

Ten investigators are involved in the SIU probe.

The SIU investigates all incidents involving police in which a person is killed or seriously injured, or when allegations of sexual assault are raised.
