Ontario sees beer tax increase

Enjoying a cold beer may cost you more in the province of Ontario. That's because Premier Kathleen Wynne's Liberal government is bumping up the beer tax.

Effective today, the cost of beer will go up by 3 cents per litre, or 25 cents per case of 24.

It's unclear how each brand will be affected as the province has called on big brewers to absorb the higher tax rates at least until 2017.

The beer tax increase was mentioned in the 2015 Ontario budget. The move is the first of four 3-cent increases that will take place on Nov. 1 during the next three years on top of annual adjustments.
