MAGA leaders are using coverage of the Los Angeles wildfires to stoke division, and it’s all “bullsh--t,” The New Abnormal co-hosts Danielle Moodie and Andy Levy said this week. From DEI to military aid for Ukraine, Republicans have co-opted the wildfire conversation with finger-pointing.
“I was thinking, how nice would it be to have only had to talk about these fires in terms of wishing people safety and not having to be political about it,” said Levy. “Unfortunately that is not the world or the country we live in.”
He added, “We have seen people like Elon Musk blaming the fires on DEI. Somehow we have seen Donald Trump blaming them on Gavin Newsom and referring to him as ‘Newscum’ in the middle of all of this.”
Rebuking such claims, Moodie declared: “The reason why these things are happening is because of the oil lobby and all of these powerful corporations that lobby the government to do absolutely nothing about climate change because it will affect their bottom line and their profit.”
Then, New York Times technology correspondent Mike Isaac joins the program to discuss Mark Zuckerberg’s controversial overhaul of Meta’s content management approach—and how that signals Silicon Valley’s shifting politics.
Plus! Adrian Carrasquillo, author of the Huddled Masses newsletter, discusses how the media could cover the incoming presidential administration’s promised mass deportations.
