OPP seize 2 guns in 2 separate traffic stops

Ontario Provincial Police are appealing to the public for help as they look for two men who fled a traffic stop on Sunday night where the driver was found to have a loaded gun.

An officer had stopped a vehicle that was speeding on Highway 404 near Finch Avenue and spotted drugs in the car.

"An arrest was made, and in doing so a loaded gun was recovered from the driver," said Sgt. Kerry Schmidt in a video statement on twitter.

At that point, he said, the vehicle's two passengers fled from the car and scaled the fence on the side of the highway, disappearing into an industrial area.

"We are appealing for any witnesses to come forward," said Schmidt, who said both men were black, with one wearing a white hoodie and dark jeans, and the other wearing a black long sleeve t-shirt and black jeans.

"We want to take guns off the street, seizing a loaded hand gun in a traffic stop is something that is very concerning for us, and we will continue to investigate that," he added.

Anyone with information is asked to get in touch with provincial police at 416 235 4981 or to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously 1-800-222-TIPS.

In addition to the incident on Highway 404, a second gun was seized on Sunday night in an unrelated traffic stop in the Mississauga area, said Schmidt.

"There was another collision involving an impaired driver," he said. "In that situation again a firearm was recovered from the driver and charges are being laid."
