Order of Nova Scotia recipients for 2015 announced

A child care advocate, a world renowned author and a bio-tech manufacturer are among the five people who will be invested into the Order of Nova Scotia this fall.

Lieutenant Governor John James Grant announced the 2015 recipients Friday.

They include:

- Dr. Margaret Macdonald Casey of Halifax, an advocate for the urgent need of accessible health care for families in the north end of Halifax.

- Louis E. Deveau of Dartmouth, who founded Acadian Seaplants Limited, which is now a multinational, bio-tech manufacturing company.

- Rudy Haase of Chester who is one of the longest serving environmentalists in the province fighting against harmful pesticides, uranium mining and nuclear power.

- Sharon Hope Irwin of Sydney, a child care advocate who created the Town Daycare Centre in Glace Bay that integrated children with physical and mental disabilities.

- Alistair MacLeod of Dunvegan, Cape Breton, who is being inducted posthumously. Recognized as one of Canada's great short story writers, his work detailed the people and culture of Cape Breton. MacLeod has had his books translated into 17 languages and is read worldwide.

The Order of Nova Scotia Advisory Council says there were 108 nominations made this year.

The ceremony will be held Sept. 30 at Province House.
