Orlebar Point officially under RDN management

The Regional District of Nanaimo board has approved a 10-year licence of occupation for Orlebar Point on Gabriola.

The board passed the motion regarding the offer for long-term tenure and management from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure at their May 28 meeting.

The licence stipulates non-exclusive use of the lands off Berry Point Road as of May 1 through April 30, 2034.

Some monies will be put toward infrastructure improvements via funding already included in the 2024-28 RDN financial plan. The plan includes $8,800 for Orlebar Point infrastructure improvements – adding curbs to the parking areas and installing new picnic benches – and an additional $5,000 for annual operations maintenance. The picnic benches that were already located at Orlebar Point were to be removed by the RDN, but the benches had already been removed by someone unknown as of a few weeks ago, staff said at the May meeting of the Electoral Area B parks and open spaces advisory committee.
