Oshawa cyclist dies in hospital days after hit and run, police say

A 21-year-old cyclist has died days after what police allege was a hit-and-run collision in Oshawa.

Durham Regional Police say Bakari John was cycling with another man around 12:45 a.m. last Sunday when he was struck by a white, newer-model Honda Civic heading southbound on Cedar Street, just south of Wentworth Street.

Police allege the car brushed past the first cyclist before colliding with John.

The two occupants of the Honda got out to check on the injured cyclist, but then ran back to the car and drove off.

The car's driver is described as a white woman, older in appearance with shoulder-length hair.

The passenger is described as a white man, in his mid-30s, standing five-foot-eight with a heavy build.

John, an Oshawa resident, died of his injuries in hospital. The other cyclist, an 18-year-old, suffered minor injuries.

Police are still looking for the motorist involved in the collision. Anyone with information about the deadly crash is asked to contact police directly or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
