Ottawa breaks another record with 105 COVID-19 cases
Ottawa has set yet another grim record with 105 new cases of COVID-19 reported Tuesday, the highest daily tally of the pandemic so far.
Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is also reporting three more fatalities, bringing the city's death toll to 285. OPH has declared 51 cases resolved, leaving 682 active cases in the city — another new record, breaking the previous one set at the end of April.
Sixty-nine of Tuesday's 105 new cases, or about two-thirds, are people under the age of 40. (The province had previously reported 106 new cases in Ottawa on Tuesday, but OPH adjusted that figure later in the day.)
There are currently 17 patients being treated in Ottawa hospitals for COVID-19, two in intensive care.
The rising numbers appear to support expert opinion that the province is firmly in the grip of a second wave, expected to peak next month.
More tests are being conducted than in the spring, and public health officials in the province are currently recommending only those who fit certain criteria, including having symptoms, be tested.
Ottawa has now seen 4,258 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the majority of which — 3,291 — are considered resolved
There are no new outbreaks listed at institutions such as schools or hospitals in Ottawa. Outbreaks have already been declared at nine schools, and more than 60 have had at least one student or staff member test positive.
Elsewhere, Holy Cross Catholic School in Kemptville has been temporarily closed by a COVID-19 outbreak.
The reports from OPH don't necessarily reflect how many people tested positive for COVID-19 on the day they're made public; rather, they indicate the number of new cases OPH is notified of as of 2 p.m. the previous day.
Ontario logged 544 newly confirmed cases Tuesday. The only health unit with more new cases than Ottawa on Tuesday was Toronto, with 251.
Quebec added 799 more cases to its total.
