Nose Hill trail improvements, Waterton park upgrades to be funded by Ottawa

Calgary Centre-North MP Michelle Rempel doled out more federal funding for several projects around the city on Friday.

The secretary of state for western economic diversification announced that Ottawa will contribute $816,500 for four projects out of the Community Infrastructure Program.

The Nose Creek Sports and Recreation Association is getting $500,000 for upgrades to the Vivo for Healthier Generations recreation facility.

The city will receive $225,000 to upgrade trails within Nose Hill Park that connect to the Trans Canada Trail.

The Grow Calgary Society, which grows produce for the Calgary Food Bank, will make improvements to its irrigation and composting systems with a $25,000 grant.

And the Aero-Space Museum of Calgary is getting $66,500 to improve accessibility at its building.

Education funding

Rempel was also at SAIT on Friday to make two federal funding announcements, including $291,375 for Innovate Calgary.

It will fund a University of Calgary-SAIT Polytechnic joint project — the Kinetica Innovation Centre — for high-tech start-up companies to develop innovative technological solutions for the energy sector.

A second investment of $297,500 goes toward SAIT Polytechnic's development of 3D virtual-training modules for skilled trade workers.

Waterton upgrades

The Conservative government also announced more than $107 million for infrastructure work in Waterton Lakes National Park in southern Alberta.

Macleod MP John Barlow said the investment will create jobs while preserving natural heritage.

The projects include a new visitor centre and restoration work on Akamina Parkway, Red Rock Parkway, highways 5 and 6, Chief Mountain Highway and redevelopment of the Cameron Lake day use area.

On Thursday, Rempel and two other federal cabinet ministers were in Calgary to announce approximately $592 million in funding for projects including the southwest ring road and a research centre at the University of Calgary.
