Crashes close highways in Ottawa, Gatineau

Police in western Quebec and Ottawa were forced to close major highways after black ice caused crashes on Saturday morning.

Quebec police were forced to close the Des Draveurs bridge eastbound and Hwy. 50 eastbound near Lac Leamy after a six-vehicle crash. It was reopened shortly after.

The incident happened near the same time as some other crashes on Hwy. 5 and 50, with only minor injuries suffered.

Also near the same time, Ottawa police closed Regional Road 174 after a single-vehicle crash near the Ottawa River.

Ottawa firefighters said they were notified by Ottawa police at about 8:05 a.m. about a vehicle that left the road and went down a bank.

Water rescue equipment and rope teams were dispatched, but they were not necessary. Firefighters were able to extricate the driver, the lone person inside the vehicle, and that person was transferred to hospital.

Police closed the 174 between Trim and Quigley Hill roads for the investigation but it reopened before 10 a.m.

Police remind drivers to navigate the roads carefully and according to the road conditions.
