Ottawa man charged after allegedly driving in circles on soccer field
Police have charged a 27-year-old man who allegedly drove onto a south Ottawa soccer field Wednesday evening while kids were playing and did doughnuts.
At around 7:15 p.m., Ottawa police received a call about an impaired driver near Victoria Street, the force said in a news release.
The driver fled after officers tried to pull him over. They followed him until he approached a soccer field near the Leitrim Road police station.
Then they abandoned the pursuit "for public safety reasons," police said.
The man then drove his vehicle onto the field — where children were playing and parents watching — and began going in circles, said police.
Nobody was hurt, however.
Officers resumed their attempts to arrest the man, but he drove away, followed by several police cruisers, police said.
He was eventually arrested on Hawthorne Avenue after officers performed a so-called "rolling block" — a tactic in which police cars box in a vehicle and force it to slow down.
The man, from Ottawa, has been charged with:
- Impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
- Possession of dangerous weapons.
- Failing to stop for police.
- Theft under $5,000.
- Three counts of breach of recognizance.
The man was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
