Ottawa man charged with impaired driving for fifth time, police say

A 49-year-old Ottawa man has been charged with impaired driving while disqualified after a crash on Highway 417, the fifth time he's been charged with driving under the influence.

Ontario Provincial Police say officers responded to a crash at 2:37 p.m. on May 13 on Hwy. 417 westbound just past the Maitland Avenue overpass.

The driver had crashed his own vehicle and remained inside, police said.

Police said officers discovered the 49-year-old had an open container of liquor in the vehicle and was driving impaired. He was also allegedly driving with a suspended licence.

There were seven charges laid including:

- Five counts of driving while disqualified.

- Driving while impaired.

- Driving with more than 80 mgs.

- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

- Taking a motor vehicle without consent.

- Driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor.

- Driving while under suspension.

The man was remanded into custody and he's set to appear in an Ottawa court on May 27.
