Officers with the Ottawa police drug unit seized 10 kilograms of cocaine worth an estimated $1 million after spotting a suspected drug deal in Centretown on Monday, the force said in a news release.

Police said they arrested a 60-year-old man after seizing the cocaine from his vehicle near the intersection of Kent and Somerset streets shortly after 8 p.m.

"This is obviously a significant seizure for the Ottawa Police Service," said Staff Sgt. Rick Carey in the release.

"We will continue to investigate offences against the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act whether that involves [marijuana], opioids or cocaine. This is a community concern and we will do all we can to bring drug traffickers before the courts."

The man remains in custody on charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking a schedule 1 substance and possession of the proceeds of crime.
