Ottawa Race Weekend 2015 event results, highlights

A record-breaking 49,500 Ottawa Race Weekend participants raised a record-breaking $800,000 and counting for charity in 2015, organizers say.

A total of 49,439 runners raced in the 41st annual race weekend's six events in 2015, an increase of about 2,000 people compared to 2014, according to a media release issued Sunday.

The more than $800,000 raised for charity by thousands of runners is also a "significant jump" over last year's $625,000 raised for charity, the release states.

Scotiabank's Charity Challenge allowed participants to run for their choice of 40 recognized charitable organizations, including The Ottawa Hospital, CHEO Foundation, Amnesty International and more.

As for record-breaking races, Kenya's Gladys Cherono broke the 10K women's record on Saturday with a finish time of 30:56, shaving 25 seconds off the previous record.

For the third year in a row, an Ethiopian man and woman took the top marathon prizes, leading a field of nearly 6,000 runners.

Girmay Birhanu, 28, finished at 02:08:14 and wasn't able to beat the Ottawa record of 02:06:54 set in 2014.

Aberu Zennebe, 31, was the first woman to cross the finish the marathon at 02:25:30 after a sprint to the finish line.
