Outdoor Ice Rink Is Ready To Go!

·1 min read

Enterprising members of the Swan Hills community have created an outdoor skating rink beside the town's tennis courts. The Town of Swan Hills gave the approval for this community-driven effort to go forward but does not have the workforce to manage and maintain an extra project in addition to their current workload, so the rink will be user-maintained going forward. The Swan Hills Fire Department was a huge help in this endeavour, flooding the rink with 20,000 gallons of water for the first layer of ice. Then they added a second layer of 3200 gallons two days later.

The outdoor rink was ready for skaters on Saturday, January 30, 2021. Several children and other community members turned out that afternoon to try out the new ice, and it appears to be a huge hit! This project continues to be improved upon; seating options are currently being sought, and efforts are underway to get the lights by the rink turned on. Thank you to all who were involved in planning and building this new outdoor ice rink for our community. It is very appreciated at a time when all of the indoor recreation opportunities in town have had to close.
