Outgoing Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan diagnosed with dengue fever for third time
SINGAPORE — Hours after he posted about being placed in an isolation ward for observation when his temperature “shot up”, outgoing Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan has been diagnosed with dengue fever for the third time in his life.
Khaw’s office confirmed his diagnosis on Thursday (23 July) afternoon. The 67-year-old tested negative for COVID-19 but was diagnosed with the mosquito-borne disease. His first bout with the illness came in the 1980s.
The former Sembawang GRC Member of Parliament is currently warded at Singapore General Hospital. He lives in the Yio Chu Kang area, which is a hot zone for dengue fever.
Earlier on Thursday, the minister had posted a “hilarious” selfie of himself with a nasal tube attached to his nose. “After 42 years, I would not expect to exit the stage in bed as a patient!”
He had been preparing his office for his successor and looking forward to the ceremony to mark the restart of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project.
On Tuesday, it was reported that three more people died of dengue fever in Singapore, as the number of weekly dengue cases exceeded 1,000 for a sixth consecutive week.
Since January, a total of 18,673 people have been infected, a number exceeded only in 2013, when 22,170 people were infected in the entire year.
